Richard Tomanek

Richard Tomanek, Avon Lake's first Big League baseball player, had a star-studded high school career at Avon Lake High School. At graduation he passed up a basketball scholarship to Ohio State to accept a draft by the Cleveland Indians. "Bones" played five years in the Indians' system beginning in 1953, and pitched the Indians to an 8-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers in his first start. In 1958, he was traded to Kansas City along with Roger Maris, and concluded his career with KC in 1960. Dick is a lifelong resident of Avon Lake. He and his wife, Maureen, live on Duff Drive.
