Frank “Red” Schaeffer

Red was an all-around athlete at Avon Lake. The 1957 graduate’s name was synonymous with athletic success in Lorain county during the early 50’s. Schaeffer earned 14 letters in four sports, four each in football, baseball and track and two in basketball. An intense competitor he earned All-Lorain County honors in three sports. As a member of the first Shoreman 11-man football team, he helped set the groundwork for the most successful program in the county and among the best in Ohio today. In the second season Avon Lake recorded its first winning season (5-3) and Red was chosen All-Conference and the team’s MVP.

Schaeffer was also a terrific catcher, playing with several Avon Lake Hall of Fame inductees during his career. He was scouted by a number of professional teams.
