Dick Wakefield, one of Avon Lake's most celebrated athletes, was an All-State basketball and football player and a high school All-American in football. He won practically every award available during his high school tenure from the league's MVP award to the "Golden Helmet" from Coca Cola. In addition, Dick still holds 4 scoring and rebounding records at Avon Lake in basketball. Upon graduation, Wakefield was presented a full scholarship to Ohio State University by Woody Hayes, A starter for three years with the Buckeyes, the All-Big-Ten receiver was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He and his family presently live in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
