Dick Wakefield

Dick Wakefield, one of Avon Lake's most celebrated athletes, was an All-State basketball and football player and a high school All-American in football. He won practically every award available during his high school tenure — from the league's MVP award to the "Golden Helmet" from Coca Cola. In addition, Dick still holds 4 scoring and rebounding records at Avon Lake in basketball. Upon graduation, Wakefield was presented a full scholarship to Ohio State University by Woody Hayes, A starter for three years with the Buckeyes, the All-Big-Ten receiver was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. He and his family presently live in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
