Ron Whitney

Ron Whitney, a 1961 graduate of Avon Lake High School, lettered in four sports and was voted Most Valuable Player in three - football, basketball and baseball. Ron received the Gordon Splete Award as the outstanding athlete of 1961 as the final recognition of his 12-letter career.

Whitney was one of Avon Lake’s outstanding all-around performers, lettering in baseball as a starting catcher his freshman through senior years. He hit .375 over four years batting at a .424 clip his junior year. He also lettered three years as a guard on Coach Robert Robinson’s basketball teams that were 42-16, including a championship 1960-61 season of 16-3 where Ron scored 39 points in one game.

In football Ron received three letters and was a two-way all-conference back, a sport for which he received a scholarship from Toledo University of the Mid-American Conference. He also ran track his sophomore and junior years as a member of the 440 and mile relay team.
