Kauffman, a former school record holder himself in the high jump, coached four state champions along the way.

Kauffman, who retired as the head coach at Avon Lake last spring, is the first person to lead the Shoremen to a Southwestern Conference title, which he achieved in 2002 and 2004. Several athletes broke numerous school records under his tutelage.
