John McCoy

Coach McCoy, an institution in Avon Lake sports circles, was a member of the Avon Lake staff for 26 years. During his tenure he coached football, basketball and baseball and was active in the community summer baseball program. Although John amassed an incredible record as freshman football and varsity baseball coach, he is probably most remembered and revered by his players as a motivator, a winner and a friend.

John’s freshman football team won 157 games, lost 27  and tied 1. During that time he had a win streak that spanned five years.

His baseball teams won 184, lost 69, and tied 5. For a brief period of time high school baseball was played in the summer; his team won two titles and had a perfect 20-0 season in 1965. John’s teams also won two titles and had four runner-up years in the Lakeland, Seaway and Lorain County Leagues. His overall baseball record at Lakeview High School, Mt. Blanchard High School and Avon Lake is 270-85-5.

Coach McCoy retired from coaching at Avon Lake in 1980. Two years later he returned to assist in a very successful football program at Fairbanks High School in Unionville Center, Ohio.
