Doug, a 1986 graduate, was one of the most versatile athletes in Avon Lake High School History. During his career as a Shoreman football, basketball, and baseball player he won about every available postseason award. He was MVP of the SWC in football and basketball, captaining both record-setting squads. His junior year he helped lead the basketball team to its first SWC championship in the school’s history and followed his senior year to quarterback the championship football team to its second-ever playoff appearance and a regional runner-up finish. A starter on three SWC championship teams, two of which are currently in the Avon Lake Sports Hall of Fame, Wichman was one of the premiere athletes of his time.
